York County Memorial Day Ceremony

Monday, May 31, 2021

The public is invited to join us as we honor the men and women who helped preserve our nation’s freedom and died while serving in our Armed Forces.

The annual York County Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. at the War Memorial on the grounds in front of York Hall. It will be preceded by the Fifes and Drums of York Town marching to the site at 11:45 a.m.

Our Keynote Speaker, Colonel William E. Townsley, USAF, (Ret), held numerous staff and command positions in his career and is a decorated Vietnam veteran and former pilot. He remains active in veteran affairs in Virginia and nationally. He is currently serving as Commander of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 824, Adjutant/Treasurer of the Military Order of the World Wars, Hampton Roads Chapter, and as a service officer for Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 13.

Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 824, will serve as the Color Guard. A wreath laying ceremony will be conducted by the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 13, and the Comte De Grasse Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

Flags will be presented by the York High School Junior ROTC. The ceremony includes the playing of "Taps."

The Memorial Day remembrance program is sponsored by the York County Historical Committee. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be canceled. Please check the Event Weather Hotline at 757.890.3520 for updated information prior to the ceremony on Memorial Day.
