Foods & Feasts of Colonial Virginia

Friday, November 27, 2020

This Thanksgiving holiday, enjoy family-friendly programs and demonstrations during this annual event on Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28, along with special shopping opportunities during Museum Store Sunday on November 29.

Visitors can explore centuries-old cooking techniques of the 17th and 18th centuries during this two-day event in the outdoor living history areas at Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Learn how early Virginians prepared meals in clay pots and iron kettles and preserved food by smoking and salt curing. Discover the cultural dishes of Powhatan Indians, English colonists, and sailors of early America to traditional foods prepared by soldiers, farmers, and enslaved people during the Revolutionary War. Food preparation in the museums' outdoor living-history areas is for demonstration purposes only.

On Thursday, November 26, a special Thanksgiving Day dinner is available on a first-come, first-served basis, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Jamestown Settlement Cafe. The cost is $19.95 for adults and $9.95 for ages 12 and under.

Just in time for the holidays, on Sunday, November 29, the gift shops at both museums will join museum stores worldwide for Museum Store Sunday, offering 20-percent off entire in-store purchases. The first 25 patrons to make a purchase also receive a museum gift bag filled with special goodies. The museum gift shops offer an inspirational and educational selection of books, prints, reproductions, educational toys, games, and souvenirs. All purchases support the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and its educational mission and programs. Admission is not required to visit the museum gift shops, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
