Seton Hill Basket-Weaving Demo

Sunday, October 13, 2019

Watch self-taught basket makers Joe and Cathy Jennings as they use pine straw from trees on their Williamsburg property to create beautiful baskets.

For about 10 years, Joe and Cathy Jennings have been making and selling their Seton Hill baskets at The Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News, This Century Art Gallery in Williamsburg, and the Gallery at York Hall in Yorktown. Now they're ready to show you how it's done. All of the pine they use is from 90-foot-tall loblolly pine trees that grow in the forest they live in just above Colonial Williamsburg's historic Colonial Capital restoration site. They hand-pick each and every strand! The basket is then started in an ancient coil method and woven from that continuous spiral of material. After soaking the straw in boiling water the basket is dried thoroughly, then stained and finished with polyurethane. Come see it all for yourself in this fascinating demo!
