Bell-Ringing Commemoration of the First African Arrival in 1619

Sunday, August 25, 2019

In an attempt to tell a more complete story of Yorktown, Grace Church will remember and honor Africans who arrived in America 400 years ago as slaves, but helped to build a country that one day would proclaim liberty.

Commemorate the arrival of the first Africans brought to English North America 400 years ago. Stolen by English privateers from a Portuguese slave ship, the men and women landed at Hampton's Point Comfort in late August of 1619. When the Act of Ports was passed by the House of Burgesses in 1691, Yorktown became the major port of entry to the Virginia colony for enslaved Africans.

There will be a brief commemorative service at 2:30 p.m. in the church, followed by the bell-ringing for one minute at 3 p.m. All are welcome.
