Nao Santa Maria Visits Yorktown!

Sunday, May 26, 2019

The Nao Santa María is making a tour of the American East Coast and we are excited to announce she has made a Port of Call here in Yorktown just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

The full-size replica is of one of the most famous ships in history and we are excited to welcome her to the Riverwalk Landing Piers. On October 12, 1492, led by Christopher Columbus, the Santa María played the main role in the discovery of America... and an encounter between two worlds.

The ship departed from Spain with the caravels “Pinta” and “Niña” and in Columbus’ famous diary where he documented his expedition—he refers to it as “nao”, as did other chroniclers of the time: “Columbus loaded, apart from those two, a nao... and on the third, being the nao bigger than the rest, he wanted to travel himself, and hence it became the flagship”.

• More than 1,200 sq ft on board
• Four decks, captain’s cabin, and living accommodations
• Length: 100 ft / Beam: 28 ft / Draft: 10 ft
• Three masts and six sails

It will hold more than 3,200 sq ft of sail, with a setting of the rigging faithful to the original Nao Santa María of the 15th century with more than 1.86 miles of line for the standing and the running.

Tours are free Thursday (10-7) and Friday (10-5) but require a ticket from Saturday through Memorial Day. Purchase tickets here or you can also do so on the piers.

Remember it's Memorial Day Weekend--the unofficial kickoff to summer so Yorktown Beach and all of Riverwalk Landing will be pretty packed with people ready to spend time in the sun, enjoy a meal with a view, and get in some shopping. Parking close to the piers will be scarce but there are spots available on the outskirts of town where it's just a short walk (or ride on our FREE Trolley) down to the waterfront!
