"Forgotten Soldier" Special Exhibition - American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

Saturday, July 13, 2019

Discover personal stories of enslaved and free African Americans who fought on both sides of the American Revolution and their contributions in establishing a nation.

Follow forgotten stories of soldiers who enlisted in the American cause for a free and independent nation or take up arms for British forces in hopes of securing their own freedom. Learn how African-American veterans worked to secure recognition of their role in the war and how some became leaders of the black community in the newly independent United States of America.

Public programming will include a series of lectures, genealogy workshops and interpretive demonstrations with re-enactors from African American military regiments. The special exhibition held in conjunction with the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution, marks the 400th anniversary of the first recorded Africans in Virginia in 1619.
