- Schooner Alliance Sail
Every April to November, the Schooner Alliance sails to the York River shore to begin its seasonal journey to entertain and educate tourists and locals alike. Here are five excellent reasons why you should add this excursion to your Yorktown itinerary.
Once you’re aboard the Schooner Alliance and drift out onto the water, you’ll feel the wind blowing in your hair and the ship swaying with the sea. You’ll smell the fresh air and hear the waves crashing around you. You may even see sea turtles, dolphins, sand sharks, and sting rays.
As you make your way across the York River, the ship’s captains will provide you with the history of not only the boat itself, but of the surrounding landscape and the American Revolution.
Families with young children (12 & under) can venture out at 10:30 in the morning for the Pirate Adventure Cruise. Kids will learn how to tie knots, raise the sails, talk with the captain, and steer the ship.
During afternoon cruises (13 & older) at 1:30 or 4 p.m., the crew explains the different parts of the ship – like the gaff, mast, and jib – and asks for volunteers to lift the sails.
The Schooner Alliance offers sunset cruises every evening at 6 p.m. Watch the sun fade away for the day and the moon illuminate across the water. It’s a great place for a date, anniversary, or a wedding.
There’s something about the sea that allows you to free your mind of the worries on land. Stare out onto the water and enjoy the peace and serenity of the York River.
