Who’s Ready to Sample Wines from Virginia... and Beyond?
Just like a good bottle of wine—our annual festival only gets better with age! This year, we are excited to feature The Best of Virginia and Beyond. That’s right! Not only will you get to sample a wide variety of wines from more than a dozen different Virginia wineries, you’ll also get to taste some pretty spectacular international wines from France, Germany, and Greece.
You can also expect more variety with at least one winery pouring specialty meads (including a pumpkin flavored one!), Cobbler Mountain Cidery serving samples of its hard cider in unique flavors like ginger-peach, and several wineries serving up their versions of the perfect sangria.
Here are this year’s Featured Virginia Wineries:
• Saudé Creek Vineyards
• Williamsburg Winery
• Rebec Vineyards
• Prince Michel Vineyard & Winery
• Mermaid Winery
• Mattaponi Winery
• Peaks of Otter Winery
• Horton Vineyards
• Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery
• Grayhaven Winery
• Elk Island Winery
• Good Luck Cellars Estate Winery
• Democracy Vineyards
• Cobbler Mountain Cidery
Our decision to also include wine from other countries is to show we share more than just history with our sister cities Zweibrücken and Port-Vendres! If you like sweeter wines, you’ll love the Rieslings from Germany, and if you’re a fan of bubbly, you can indulge in sparkling wines from France. There will also be Greek wines—a special tribute to the heritage of local philanthropists and patriots, the late Nick and Mary Mathews.
Greece: Samartzis Two Rivers, white and red; and Yiamas, white and red
France: Le Grand Caillou white, Le Figuier Rosé, Chateau Laussac Bordeaux, and Francois Montand Brut
Germany: Dr. Loosen Sparkling Riesling, Dr. Loosen Riesling, and Villa Wolf Pinot Noir.
As if the wine selection isn’t enough, you can also expect an eclectic lineup of more than 30 different local artists, businesses, and attractions that will have booths set up in the event area. Several food trucks and food vendors will be on site selling everything from seafood to BBQ in case you want to grab lunch. And not one, but two fabulous bands will be playing throughout the day. The event kicks off with Unleaded, an acoustical rock band, who will perform at 12:30 p.m., followed by Slapnation who will take the stage at 3 p.m. to play a mix of R&B, Motown, disco, and beach music!
Insider Tip: Tickets are $30 in advance. If you buy them in person at the more than 20 different locations throughout the county, there’s no extra fee. Purchasing them online does cost a little extra. They are $35 at the gates on the day of the festival, if the event hasn’t sold out before then. For a complete list of ticket locations, visit www.villageevents.org or call 757- 877-2933.
All of the proceeds from ticket sales goes to two local not-for-profit organizations. Sister Cities Yorktown oversees the student and citizen exchanges with Port-Vendres, France, and their scholarships to York County Schools. Another portion of sales goes to the American Heart Association.
Okay. If after reading about all the exciting plans, you still need a little convincing, we’ve included our special profiles on many of the wineries that explain a little more about each vineyard and exactly what types of wine, mead, and cider they produce! Make sure you’re following our event on Facebook as we’ll be posting updates you don’t want to miss, all leading up to the fun on Saturday, Oct. 7.
