Yorktown Beach Prohibited & Allowed Items

People lounging on the sandy beach.York County and the National Park Service (NPS) take pride in keeping the beach and picnic area as clean and safe as possible.

Below is a list of rules and permitted/prohibited items that are allowed at Yorktown Beach and the beach picnic area.

Yorktown Beach

(County owned)

  • Tents are permitted (but not overnight)
  • No alcohol
  • No dogs
  • No loud music
  • No grills
  • No glass
  • No fishing from the rocks
  • Metal detecting is permitted on the sand of Yorktown Beach provided that there is no disturbance of vegetated dunes

NPS 1001 Beach

(NPS owned, maintained by County)

Between Watermen’s Museum and American Revolution Museum at Yorktown (across from Mathews Street)

  • Dogs are permitted on a leash
  • Tents are permitted (but not overnight)
  • No alcohol
  • No metal detecting
  • No fishing from rocks
  • No charcoal grills or open fires (gas grills permitted)
  • No wedding ceremonies permitted

Beach Picnic Area

(NPS owned, managed/operated by County)

  • Dogs are permitted on a leash
  • Tents are permitted (but not overnight and cannot be staked in the ground)
  • No alcohol
  • No charcoal grills or open fires (gas grills permitted)
  • No metal detecting
  • No fishing from rocks
  • No swimming
  • No camping trailers
  • No wedding ceremonies permitted
  • Amplified music prohibited (acoustic permitted)
  • Releasing of balloons prohibited (proximity to York River)
  • Releasing of doves, butterflies and dropping of rice, birdseed, and flower petals prohibited
